Takeshi Murata

In the “Synthesizers” series, Murata uses digital animation to create still lifes in hyperrealistic interiors. Playing with the convention of HD video propagated by the commercial film industry, Murata makes surreal, unsettling compositions in which reality seems too flat and too perfect.

They depict ordinary objects of mass culture which relate to urban modes of consumption and their paraphernalia: energy drinks, anti-depressants, Apple products, exercise equipment. These objects were meticulously rendered with the use of computer software or purchased as ready-mades from the web’s 3D supermarkets. In his creative process, Murata relies solely on peer knowledge transmitted in how-to videos on YouTube and on discussion forums.
