Darja Bajagić

born 1990 in Montenegro

Darja Bajagić is a painter and creator of installations and video works. One of the main subjects addressed by the artist is the relationship between visual representation and the circulation of pornography on the web.

Bajagić analyses ways in which female sexuality is depicted and its various means of web-based distribution. She is especially interested in how female sexuality is shaped in reference to the fantasy involving women from Eastern Europe.

At the heart of her ambiguous game are the issues of aesthetic norms being transgressed and of the canons of self-portrayal and being portrayed in a porn context. Seeking answers to questions concerning the forms in which taboo content is privatised on the internet, the artist infiltrates porn discussion forums and establishes contact with private distributors of such images online.

From the photos she found or purchased through these sources, Bajagić creates minimalistic collages in which the women’s images become formal elements of the composition while their initial pornographic context is reduced to the level of a visual cue.
